Dangerous Candidate Choices Wertheim Advocating Diminishing Permanent Fund

According to the Albuquerque Journal, John Wertheim—former Chairman of the Democratic Party of New Mexico—has announced that he plans to run for State Treasurer. The Journal article says that,"if elected, he would seek to use the Treasurer’s Office to improve the state’s economy, in part by pushing for a portion of the state’s permanent funds to be used for early childhood education.” (See article here: www.abqjournal.com/253858/news/private-fundraisers....html)

The notion of raiding the permanent fund for education funding is not a new concept, but it is a flawed one. This past session, Democrats voted for a similar measure, and it is more of the same. Instead of looking for a quick-fix and throwing money at a problem, we must look at the actual source of the problem and begin to fix the broken education system. Stop-gap fixes are not the answer; we need long-term solutions.

Governing without a long-term view and depleting the permanent fund would set a dangerous precedent for the future of our state. Additionally, such decisions are to be made by our Legislative body, and Wertheim's statement on the issue is out of place and is nothing more than a political ploy. Our state needs strong, conservative leaders—not those who simply choose to throw money at problems and hope they will go away in time.

Missed Deadlines Added to List of ObamaCare Failures

ALBUQUERQUE - The Obama Administration has missed half of the deadlines set on ObamaCare. According to Fox News, there were 82 self-imposed deadlines within the Affordable Care Act, and the Administration has missed 41 of them. (Read more here: www.foxnews.com/politics/2013/08/20/administration...EIXo5)
"Since its inception, we have continually fought against ObamaCare, as we know that it is bad policy and that it is nothing but a looming failure that will actually hurt more than it will help,” said RPNM Chairman John Billingsley."The fact that deadlines continue to be missed—coupled with the Administration’s delayed implementations—it is glaringly obvious that even those who first supported and pushed this healthcare takeover realize its huge potential for failure.”
"As we have said before, ObamaCare is disastrous, and we must work in upcoming elections to elect leaders who care enough about New Mexicans to repeal this legislation,” continued Billingsley.

Pearce Traveling CD 2, Talking with Constituents Throughout August

ALBUQUERQUE - The U.S. House of Representatives is on August Recess. During this time period, Congressman Steve Pearce has traveled New Mexico’s Second Congressional District, holding town hall meetings and talking with constituents.

According to an Albuquerque Journal article by Michael Coleman, Congresswoman Michelle Lujan Grisham has held one town hall type meeting this August, as has Congressman Ben Ray Lujan, while Senators Tom Udall and Martin Heinrich have engaged in smaller meetings (see article here: www.abqjournal.com/249152/politics/nm-voters-expec....html). Congressman Pearce has five town hall meetings during the month of August and hosted a women’s forum in Las Cruces last week—along with many roundtables and constituent visits.
"Congressman Steve Pearce always utilizes the month of August to listen to the needs of his constituents and keep them informed on what is happening in D.C.,” said RPNM Chairman John Billingsley."As the New Mexico delegation’s only Republican, we are proud of the work that he continues to do. He is an active and hardworking member of Congress, and we appreciate his dedication to serving New Mexicans.”
"It’s a shame that the rest of the delegation does not follow this example of accountable leadership,” continued Billingsley."We definitely need more leaders like Congressman Pearce.”

RPNM STANDS BY RNC LETTER TO NBC, CNN

ALBUQUERQUE – NBC and CNN have announced their plans to produce films celebrating the life of Hillary Clinton. RNC Chairman Reince Priebus wrote a letter to the networks, calling for them to cancel their plans to produce the films. Otherwise, Priebus wrote, the Republican National Committee will not partner with the networks for upcoming Presidential debates.

RPNM Chairman John Billingsley issued the following statement, supporting Chairman Priebus’s letter and calling for journalistic integrity:
"I stand firmly in support of Chairman Priebus and his call for journalistic ethics from NBC and CNN. It is appalling to think that these two major networks would produce such films with the 2016 elections coming up. There is little doubt that doing so would be a push to help her as a Presidential candidate, and even promote her to celebrity status.
"It is time to demand integrity from news networks and call for fair treatment, regardless of party. Journalists are intended to give fair play and leave their own politics out of the news. Yet, that is not what we have seen time and again. Unfortunately, many have used their positions to support their own agendas, and it is time for this to stop. The decision by NBC and CNN to produce these films is unacceptable. The Republican Party of New Mexico stands with Chairman Priebus, and we are thankful to have leadership who will call out those news networks that so blatantly show a bias.”
