ALBUQUERUQE - Santa Fe Mayor David Cross has proposed a ban on ammunition feeding devices or magazines that can hold more than ten rounds. City Councilors Patti Bushee and Ron Trujillo also signed onto the bill. (Read the full bill here: www.santafenm.gov/documentcenter/view/40772).
Republican Party of New Mexico Chairman John Billingsley issued the following statement regarding the proposed ban:
"This bill is a direct violation of the Second Amendment rights of Santa Fe citizens. The Second Amendment states plainly, ‘the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.’ Not only does this legislation clearly show Mayor Cross’s disregard for the constitutional rights of Americans, but it also displays his far-left ideas.
"While we can all agree that there are steps that should be taken to ensure the safety of our families and communities, this law does nothing to combat crime or focus on the pressing mental health issues in our society. Instead, it simply criminalizes law abiding citizens and breaches our freedoms.
"Firearms that utilize such magazines are often used for recreation and competition, as well as owned for self-defense purposes. Those freedoms should not be stripped away in an effort to succumb to the extreme progressive movement.”
Chairman Billingsley urges all concerned citizens to contact the Santa Fe City Council and express their strong opposition to the bill. The bill is scheduled for a vote on Wednesday, June 26th. The hearing will be at 7:00 p.m. at Santa Fe City Hall.
