Governor David F. Cargo Funeral Arrangements - From French Funerals
CARGO, GOVERNOR DAVID F. 1929-2013 - David F. Cargo of Albuquerque, NM passed away at age 84 on Friday, July 5, 2013. He was born in Dowagiac, Michigan, the eldest of three children born to Francis and Mary (Harton) Cargo. He earned his Bachelor's degree, Master of Public Administration and a Juris Doctorate from the University of Michigan.
He served two years in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and moved to New Mexico to practice law in 1957. He served as a member of the New Mexico House of Representatives from 1963 to 1966 before being elected as the state’s youngest Governor at age 37 and served two terms between 1967-1971. As governor, Cargo"Lonesome Dave,” started the first state film commission in the United States which has brought millions of dollars in revenue to the state of New Mexico. Cargo established ties to Hollywood and was even asked to appear in several films. In 1969, he made a cameo appearance in a Western"The Good Guys and the Bad Guys,” and in 1971 appeared in "Bunny O'Hare" with Bette Davis and Ernest Borgnine.
Cargo counted as accomplishments his creation of a Human Rights Commission and many libraries throughout the State of New Mexico.
Survivors include five children, Veronica, David, Patrick, Elena and Eamon; as well as his five grandchildren, Kevin, Jordan Patrick, Reese, Maddie, and Kieran. He is also survived by his brother, Gerald Cargo, and wife, Barbara, of Syracuse, NY. He was preceded in death by his former wife, Ida Jo Anaya, and brother, John Cargo.
Governor Cargo will lie in state in the Rotunda of the New Mexico State Capitol in Santa Fe on Thursday, July 11, 2013 from 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. A Memorial Service will follow in the Rotunda at 4:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday, July 12, 2013, 10:00 a.m., at Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi, 131 Cathedral Pl., Santa Fe. He will be laid to rest in Santa Fe National Cemetery following Mass. Memorial contributions may be made to the New Mexico Library Foundation, P.O. Republican Party of New Mexico Chairman John Billingsley issued the following statement regarding the passing of Former New Mexico Governor David Cargo:
"The officers and staff at the Republican Party of New Mexico join me in expressing our condolences to the family of Governor David Cargo. All who had the pleasure of working with or knowing Governor Cargo know that his legacy of service will live on in the state of New Mexico.
"We are grateful for the years of service he gave and for his dedication to making our state a better place to live. His leadership left its mark on our state, and we know that he was respected by many across New Mexico.”
Governor Cargo served as a Republican Governor of New Mexico from 1967-1970.

PROGRESSNOW MISSING THE POINT…AGAIN
ALBUQUERUQE - ProgressNow New Mexico has recently criticized Congressman Steve Pearce for a flight to Egypt to visit American troops. Republican Party of New Mexico Chairman John Billingsley issued the following statement in response:
"ProgressNow’s attacks are reprehensible and senseless—and as always, misguided. It is inexcusable for ProgressNow to repeatedly miss the point and overlook the true issues at hand. The fact of the matter is that Congressman Pearce flew on a last minute flight to visit our troops. As a veteran, he knows the importance of elected officials being active and focused on our military men and women. His commitment to the trip, even after a Congressional Delegation trip fell through, should be praised, as he was making good on a promise to visit New Mexico’s troops.
"While it has been touted that none of the rest of the House delegation reported foreign travel in 2012, perhaps we should question why they did not feel a sense of duty to visit troops, instead of pointing the finger at the delegation’s sole Republican. There is no doubt that Congressman Pearce is the most active Member of the delegation, and that he is always engaged with his constituents—both those at home and those bravely serving overseas.”

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families of the fallen firefighters who lost their lives to protect communities, homes, and families in Arizona. This loss is a tragedy and a reminder of the bravery of those who serve in this manner. These same firefighters assisted with fires in Ruidoso, Jemez and others in New Mexico, where they helped save homes and lives. We express our gratitude for their continued commitment to safety and their courage, and we extend our sympathies to their friends, fellow firefighters, and families.
